Tapestry needles are essentially cross-stitch embroidery needles with a large eye and a blunt tip. These needles are particularly suitable for use in needlepoint, petit point, cross-stitch, and embroidery on canvas or plastic canvas. The blunt tip allows the needle to glide smoothly through the fabric.
For cross-stitch, finer needles are generally used, such as sizes 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, and 28. The blunt, rounded tip ensures that the needle easily glides between the fabric and the thread without splitting or damaging the fibers.
Larger sizes, such as size 16 and below, can be used for sewing knitted or crocheted projects together in addition to embroidery, and are sometimes called "darning needles." Due to their blunt tip, these larger sizes are also ideal for children.
